Why Your Doors Stick
A door that sticks is one of those small annoyances you feel every single day. The good news: it is almost always fixable in one visit, and the fix lasts when you deal with the real cause instead of just shaving the edge.
Why doors start sticking
Wood moves. In the Upstate our summers are humid and our winters are dry, and a solid or hollow-core door swells and shrinks with that swing. Add a few years of a house settling and hinges slowly loosening, and a door that once swung clean starts dragging on the jamb or the floor.
What we check first
Before touching the door itself, we check the easy causes: loose hinge screws, a strike plate that has shifted, and whether the jamb is still square. Nine times out of ten a sticking door is a hinge or a jamb problem, not the door.
The fix that lasts
If the door truly needs easing, we plane only where it is binding and seal the bare edge so it does not soak up moisture and swell again. Then we reset the hinges and strike so the door sits square and latches with a light push. That is the difference between a fix that holds and one that comes back next season.
