We hang fans and fixtures on a box rated to carry the weight, so nothing wobbles.
A ceiling fan is a small motor with three long levers bolted to it, running over your bed eight hours a night. A light fixture is the opposite of that. It's dead weight, and it hangs there doing nothing but getting older. Most of these calls are about turning one into the other. The builder-grade light in the dining room has finally got to go, or the fan that came with the house has picked up a hum it didn't have last summer.

Start at the box
A ceiling box that has carried a light fixture for years has been carrying dead weight the whole time. Hang a fan off that same box and the load starts moving. A fan works at its mounting every hour it runs, which is how ceilings end up cracked and fixtures end up swinging over a bed. Wobble is the other thing people call about, and a balance kit clipped to a blade is treating a symptom. Check the bracket instead. If it never seated flat against the box, or the box itself has any give in it, no clip on a blade is going to settle that fan down.
What happens on the ladder
Before the old fixture comes down, we get up there and read what the box is rated to carry. If it will hold the fan, we mount it, level it, and run it through every speed before the ladder gets packed away. If it won't, we stop there and leave your old fixture up and working. Boxing a ceiling and pulling new wire is an electrician's work, not ours.
Where the electrician takes over
We work on the circuits that are already there. New circuits, added wiring, panel work, and anything living behind the breaker belong to a licensed electrician.

Framing, not wiring
What holds a fan up is framing and hardware, which puts it squarely in a carpenter's hands. Sometimes the box up there is rated for a light and nothing heavier, and then the ceiling needs an electrician before a fan goes anywhere near it. Fan and fixture questions
Can you install a ceiling fan where there's no fan box, or do I need an electrician?
If there's no fan-rated box up there, that part is an electrician's job, not ours. We install and replace fans and light fixtures on existing circuits, including swapping a light for a fan where the box is already rated to carry one. We do not run new circuits, add wiring, or touch panels. Send a photo of the existing fixture and we'll tell you which of the two you have before anyone drives out.
Will you install a fan on a vaulted or two-story ceiling?
Yes, where we can reach it safely with our own ladders. High foyer and vaulted-ceiling fans need a downrod sized to the slope and a sloped-ceiling adapter, which is worth sorting out before you buy the fan. Tell us the ceiling height and pitch when you call so we bring the right gear on the first trip.
Can you do several fans and fixtures in one visit?
Yes, and that's the way to book it. A straight swap onto an existing fan-rated box is the short part of the day, so several fixtures in one house normally fit into a single trip. What adds time is a box that isn't rated for a fan, a heavy fan on a downrod, or a ceiling high enough to need staging. List every fixture you want done when you call.
